Hailing from Osaka, Micasadeco & Café opened its flagship Hong Kong restaurant this month at Langham Place in Mongkok – its first franchise outside Japan. Known for its fluffy, soufflé-like pancakes, the restaurant also serves up a diverse savoury menu, ranging from pastas, to sandwiches, to rice bowls. We recently dived into the menu to get a glimpse of what Hong Kong diners can look forward to.
Our tasting began with cold glasses of matcha latte ($44) and lemonade soda ($48). With the latte, the slightly astringent taste of the matcha was well balanced by the creaminess of the milk.
The detox salad with yoghurt dressing ($78) made for a refreshing interlude from the late summer heat; the dill in the dressing was the highlight.
While we waited for our other dishes to arrive, we ogled the busy kitchen and towers of fluffy pancakes being made.
The all’arrabbiata Kyoto style ($88) is a mix of aubergine and seafood tossed in a tomato-based pasta sauce, embellished with bonito flakes for a Japanese twist.
The tandoori chicken sandwich ($98) comes with a small green salad and roasted potatoes. We couldn’t really taste the tandoori marinade, which made for bland-tasting chicken.
The Micasadeco bowl ($98) is made up of brown rice topped with mentaiko, meatballs, omelette, pumpkin, burdock and lotus root. A tea broth is poured over to give the rice more flavour.
The signature ricotta cheese pancake ($118) is served alongside maple syrup, sweet whipped Hokkaido cream and a generous dusting of icing sugar. We liked the airy texture of the pancake, and since we’re egg fans, we enjoyed the pronounced eggy flavour.
The matcha pancake ($138) comes with azuki bean paste, chestnut and sweet whipped Hokkaido cream. The taste was more bitter than other matcha pancakes we’ve tried in the past, so we’d only recommend this one to serious matcha lovers.
Verdict
With its easy-going and diverse menu, there should be something to suit every craving at Micasadeco & Café. We can see this trendy café competing with A Happy Pancake for long queues.
