I love a brunch that runs late, and Silencio’s new Jazzakaya brunch ($458/person) is on every weekend from 12–4:30pm – excellent.

If you haven’t yet visited, Silencio is located in LKF Tower and is intimate, sleek and sophisticated. The focus is on Japanese izakaya favourites and live jazz (hence “jazzakaya”).

Silencio Hong Kong

On our visit, one Sunday afternoon around 1:30pm, the restaurant was almost full even amidst the current COVID-19 challenges. We sat down, ordered our mains and then loaded up some plates at the buffet table.

The buffet

Guests can take their pick from the following stations: daily raw seafood, seasonal sashimi and maki, yakitori and grill, seafood and vegetable tempura and farmer’s market autumn salad.

While the tempura and grilled items were fine, it was the sashimi and maki that had me going back for thirds. Unlimited high-quality fresh seafood… yes, please. I highly recommend the spicy tuna maki and the hamachi and scallop sashimi.

Main courses

Silencio Hong Kong

There are eight main courses from which to choose, and options include everything from mochi pancakes, to Wagyu fried rice, to an eggs Benedict-like dish with lobster tempura on a sake blini. Feeling indulgent, we upgraded to have the Wagyu sando (+$180) and uni bomb (+$260).

The Wagyu sando is created with Miyazaki A4 Wagyu tenderloin, accented with Kewpie Mayo and tonkatsu sauce, housed in between fluffy Hokkaido milk bread. This was worth the upgrade as the meat was delicious and truly buttery soft.

The uni bomb is basically a wreath of Hokkaido and Korean sea urchin atop a sushi doughnut. Personally, I thought there was too much rice for the amount of uni, and the rice and sauce were slightly too tangy, which distracted from the mild creaminess of the main attraction.

Dessert

Silencio Hong Kong

After filling up at the buffet and indulging in our mains, we were almost too full for dessert. After deciding to take a bite of each, we then took a few more because the options on the dessert platter (especially the gooey black sesame ice cream) were very good.

Verdict

Silencio is a lovely, modern addition to Hong Kong’s Japanese food scene. The vibe is inviting, and the base price for brunch is very reasonable considering the quality. If you feel like indulging yourself/spoiling someone further, there is a caviar course ($360 for 30g with house-made sake blinis) and champagne packages (+$658 for Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut NV or +$1,888 for Dom Pérignon 2009, both unlimited for two hours). Vegetarian and vegan dishes are also available upon request.
