The first time I went to Felix was after a work event. It was time for dinner and we were all starving. Colleagues were in from out of town and someone must have suggested Felix without realising it’s a fine-dining spot – because once the menus were opened, we were quickly told we could only order one drink and one starter each. While I don’t remember much about the food that evening (just my slight disappointment!), I do remember the overall vibe.
Designed by Philippe Starck, Felix is extremely sleek, with glass and white marble everywhere and floor-to- ceiling windows on both sides. When it opened in 1994, I imagine it was the chicest restaurant in town. These days, most fine-dining restaurants feel slightly warmer, with more pops of colour or earthy tones. So Felix feels both old school (what I imagined a big-city restaurant was like as a teen growing up in suburban Canada) and futuristic at the same time. The upbeat pop music was similarly varied, with 80s pop numbers like Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” as well as more modern pop hits like Kylie Minogue’s “Stop Me From Falling”. All this to say that Felix is still a very pretty restaurant with very pretty views.
We went on a weekday, and I was surprised by how busy the restaurant was. Even with our current conditions, it was nearly full, with couples enjoying the bar (don’t miss the cosy American bar up one of the staircases, as well as the main bar), families celebrating birthdays and colleagues digging into business dinners. The service was very attentive and the noise levels were manageable.
Here are some of the highlights from our Felix Experience menu ($1,328/person) by Chef de Cuisine Juan Gomez:
Amuse-bouche (Japanese cucumber and crab, quail egg and caviar, tofu puff with garlic shrimp and mango caviar)
Chicken consommé, black truffle ravioli, chicken chicharrón
Hokkaido scallop, XO beurre blanc, mushrooms, cabbage
Pan-fried foie gras, citric panko crust, green apple relish
Wild sea bass loin with cannellini beans, Iberian chorizo, Romanesco
Chargrilled Iberian pork pluma with creamy saffron rice, broccolini, spring vegetables
Milk tea cheesecake
Verdict
I’m thankful that this second trip to Felix involved so many delicious dishes. The East-meets-West flavours were lovely and the overall experience was a treat. For some, the portions may be on the small side (I wouldn’t say I left extremely full). However, they are generous with their tasty bread basket, so one could always ask for more bread!
