Beach-ready tiki-motif glasses and tasteful tropical inspirations from the South Pacific form the decor at Honi Honi. I hadn’t been back since my days in college, and it’s nice to see the lounge still draws a large crowd after work and during happy hour.

Opened in 2012, Honi Honi is known for its impressive collection of rum, with over 200 varieties to try, and its group cocktails, which are super fun for a night out, made to cater to a group of 6–9 people (during non-COVID times, of course).

While the vibe is pretty chill, the new menu of CBD cocktails ($160 each) will relax you even more. Around 30ml of LIFE CBD is added to the new cocktails, but it can also be added to signature drinks on request.

Starting with two on the new menu, the CBD Honi Honi Collins is made with Greenall’s gin, lemongrass and elderflower, with the elderflower slightly overpowering this refreshing drink. Also, my cocktail was a little too well shaken and tasted a bit watery.

If you like getting caught in the rain, the CBD pina colada is a must-order. It may not come frozen, but it does come filled with coconut and is shaken with Don Q Gold rum complemented by flavours of lime and pineapple. I felt like I was back in the Caribbean on a tropical holiday drinking this one!

LIFE CBD can also be added to signature cocktails on request, and Honi Honi has a lot of signatures to offer. I recommend either the thirst-quenching Matomato ($135) or the fruity Miehana Twist ($150), both served in a tall, kitschy glass.

Packed with cucumber, Hendrick’s gin, Cointreau, cucumber, basil and a bit of sugarcane syrup, Matomato is an invigorating concoction.

Miehana Twist contains New Grove oak-aged rum, coconut rum and Clément Créole shrubb. This drink is on the stronger side, but the pineapple, mango and passion fruit purée make this cocktail quite easy-drinking.

Verdict

Most of the cocktails at Honi Honi do not need a heavy shake based on the spirits and liqueurs used. The CBD elevated our drinking experience, making us feel more relaxed, but I did not notice any dramatic effects from the cannabidiol throughout the evening. You need to really stir the CBD droplets into the drinks so that you don’t experience any bitter aftertaste. I appreciate this tiki lounge not just because it’s one of Hong Kong’s longest-standing bars, but its quirky theme is also the closest we’ll get to escaping on a Polynesian holiday for now.
