Fast-casual dining concepts have increased over the years in Hong Kong, especially for those who are looking for healthy alternatives during the day.
With the recent launch of Bengal Brothers, this cool spot adds to the fast-casual space as another great choice for takeaway if you’re around the Admiralty or Wanchai areas.
Located on Johnston Road, Bengal Brothers specialises in kati rolls and warm bowls, with some interesting history behind the dishes. The menu is inspired by Nizam’s in Kolkata, a restaurant that originally coined the kati roll in 1932. Today, Bengal Brothers offers their rolls in flaky paratha filled with meat or veggies options, fresh salad, tangy chutneys and aromatic herbs.
The sweet potato chaat ($55) is a popular street snack of roasted sweet potato drizzled in yoghurt and chutneys, topped with pomegranate and fresh herbs.
The first-class bowls come with cucumber and peanut salad, chutneys and a choice of protein serve on a bed of fluffy jasmine rice. I recommend the railway lamb roast bowl ($100), which reminded me of a lamb biryani dressed in tomato sauce and sweet onion.
A kati roll is a must-order here, and we opted for the BB classic roll ($90), which contains beaten egg and chicken tikka layered with mint and cashew chutney and house pickles. We loved how flaky the paratha was!
To drink, the mango lassi ($55) is special. Creamy, thick and fragrant, each sip is slightly tart, with a hint of cardamom and loads of mango flavour.
Verdict
The prices at Bengal Brothers are super reasonable, and with the hot summer upon us, these delicious bowls and rolls would make excellent options for your beach and junk trips too.
