Tai Hang, located to the southeast of Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island, is a cosy neighbourhood dripping with charm. It’s also where the famous century-old Fire Dragon Dance takes place every Mid-Autumn Festival, fitting for an area littered with historical buildings and an abundance of old-school appeal.
We love spending afternoons and evenings exploring Tai Hang’s atmospheric alleyways and backstreets named after former British government officials (Brown, Ormsby, Jones, and more). These streets are lined with trendy cafés, international restaurants, and local eats interspersed with long-standing auto-repair shops and a few remaining village houses.

The best restaurants in Tai Hang
Mugisaki
If “ramen” is your middle name, Mugisaki is your game. This cash-only ramen shop dishes out some of the best shoyu ramen (HKD98) in Hong Kong. This ramen type features a light, savoury, soy-sauce-based broth, and Mugisaki’s version is five-star quality. We also enjoy the even simpler flavours of the salt-based shio ramen (HKD78) here.

Chin Jor Fan Tong
Chin Jor Fan Tong is the epitome of Tai Hang cool, another noodle spot delivering slurp-worthy Chinese noodles in a groovy dai-pai-dong-like space. The flavours – sharp, spicy, sweet, and sour – are absolutely addictive, and we like that you can select your preferred noodle type, spice and “numbing” levels, and toppings. Our must-order is the braised beef sweet potato noodles (HKD105), presenting an intensely flavourful broth and delightfully chewy noodles.

Tipsy Restaurant & Bar
Nestled on the first floor of the Little Tai Hang boutique hotel, modern European Tipsy ticks all the right boxes when it comes to chilling out, even offering a lovely outdoor terrace area. The food is creative, and the menu of small plates, mains, and bigger sharing dishes screams elevated comfort food. The restaurant’s greatest hits include the truffle toast with Parma ham and mozzarella (HKD88), yellowfin tuna tartare with watermelon (HKD168), and sea urchin pasta with flying fish roe and fennel (HKD288), each taking our palate on a journey across the Med.

Qué Pasa Tapas y Vino
Deadly Rabbits Concepts has recently rebranded its Porkcentric restaurant in Tai Hang, shifting the focus to Spanish tapas and wine in a supremely warm and inviting space. Qué Pasa’s menu reads like the best of Spanish cuisine, featuring dishes like charcoal-grilled octopus (HKD168) and suckling pig (HKD388) in addition to tapas aplenty. The restaurant’s La Siesta daily happy-hour deals from 3PM till 6PM are some of the best around, with drinks and tapas priced from HKD48.

Hassun Japanese Restaurant
When it comes to a Japanese all-rounder in Tai Hang, Hassun is our pick. The atmosphere is intimate, the service is warm, and the authentic dining experience is reasonably priced given the quality of ingredients. Hassan’s colourfully hand-drawn menu showcases dishes ranging from snacks like sea grapes (HKD128) and grilled cod roe (HKDD88) to soft-shell crab tempura (HKD98) and chicken skewers (from HKD28). The grilled eel on rice (HKD98), available at lunchtime, is an especially popular option.

Nocino
A viral restaurant if there ever was one, Nocino debuted in Tai Hang earlier this year to daily queues out the door (granted, it IS a small venue). This Swiss-Italian restaurant is beloved for its punchy homemade pasta dishes, particularly the ox cheek and pickled walnut ragù pappardelle (HKD178) and ‘nduja reginette (HKD178). We’re also big fans of chef Matthew Ziemski’s signature Wagyu beef tartare (HKD148), topped with crispy potato shreds. A testament to its quick success, chef Matthew has since expanded the Nocino concept to Central and Kwun Tong.

The Socialhouse
With a moniker like The Socialhouse, it’s a given that this contemporary European restaurant’s atmosphere is on point. This spot has been satisfying diners for more than a decade with its hearty, meaty plates of roasted Spanish suckling pig (HKD328/HKD608), roasted New Zealand baby rack of lamb (HKD328), and slow-cooked French confit duck leg (HKD328). For dessert, the apple napoleon (HKD88) is a top sweet ending.

Dough Kitchen
Pasta and pizza fans, take note of Dough Kitchen. The restaurant’s freshly handmade pasta is simply superb, and you can’t go wrong with either traditional faves like the Wagyu bolognese (HKD188) and vongole (HKD188) with plenty of clams or fusion creations such as the sukiyaki beef tagliatelle (HKD188) and lobster with XO sauce pasta (HKD248); of all the al-dente Italian noodles though, it’s the sea urchin pasta (HKD228) that reigns supreme with diners. On the pizza front, the Parma ham pizza (HKD138/HKD178) is our choice, gilded with fragrant white truffle.

Tandoori Junction
With another branch nearby in Causeway Bay and an outpost much further afield in Bangkok, Tandoori Junction is a cheap and cheerful eatery serving up real-deal Indian dishes. We return time and again to savour the likes of tandoori lamb shank (HKD198), butter chicken (HKD128), kadai paneer (HKD108), and some of the best naan (HKD22) around. The spice factor is legit!

Bing Kee Cha Dong
A legendary open-air dai pai dong in Tai Hang, Bing Kee Cha Dong, open since 1957, has an unbeatable vibe and is treasured for its classic and simple local dishes. Sit back with a trio of pork chop noodles (HKD32), condensed milk toast (HKD14), and a very potent iced milk tea (HKD22) and thank the gods that spots like Bing Kee still exist in Hong Kong. Bing Kee’s hours run from 7AM till 3PM every day except Monday.
