Tart, tangy, sweet, creamy, crumbly… all these words describe one of our all-time favourite desserts: cheesecake. Cheesecake comes in many shapes and forms, with several restaurants and bakeries around town putting their own unique spin on this baked treat.
We’ve searched the city to find the best cheesecakes around and have found that not all cheesecakes are created equal and that there truly is a cheesecake choice for any mood.
Hong Kong’s top cheesecake
The sweet: The Cheesecake Factory

The Cheesecake Factory is a popular American chain first opened in Hong Kong a few years back, and the excitement has not died down yet – you’ll still often find queues out the door for the restaurant’s crazy cheesecake creations. True to its name, The Cheesecake Factory offers an extensive menu of ridiculously decadent cheesecake flavours, including but not limited to Godiva chocolate cheesecake, Cinnabon cinnamon swirl cheesecake, Oreo dream extreme cheesecake, ultimate red velvet cake cheesecake, and many, many more.
Best for: your daily calorie intake (seriously, some cheesecakes rank at around 1,500 calories per slice!)
Price per slice: from HKD84 for the original flavour
The Cheesecake Factory, Shop G102, G/F, Gateway Arcade, Harbour City, 25 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2791 6628
The Basque: La Viña

Originating in San Sebastian, Spain, Basque cheesecake, with its airy, soufflé-like mouthfeel and distinct burnt exterior, is quite literally everywhere in Hong Kong. While we’ve yet to find one we don’t like, there is one that stands out above the rest. La Viña creates Basque cheesecake that’s not overly sweet but is deliciously piquant and creamy. The bakery’s creative flavours range from double pistachio to Thai tea brown sugar mochi.
Best for: fans of savoury versus sweet
Price per cake: from HKD56 for the 3-inch original Basque cheesecake

Coming in four-, five-, six-, and eight-inch cakes, Cheesy has a size to suit every group. The brand’s creamy signature cheesecake features a crunchy biscuit base topped with layers of both cheesecake and whipped cream. Look out for the creative seasonal flavours.

The classic: The Mandarin Cake Shop

Sometimes, simple really is best. The Mandarin Cake Shop named this the 1963 Mandarin cheesecake after the year in which the recipe was perfected at the hotel bake shop. The cheesecake in question is made with sour cream, cream cheese, and almond powder. Served crowned with a dark chocolate disc when bought whole and white chocolate discs when ordered by the slice, this elegant cake never fails to satisfy.
Best for: a classy teatime treat
Price per slice: HKD72 (or HKD508 for the 15cm cake)

The New York style: Sbakery by Mama Soo

Fluffy, creamy, sweet, and sharp at the same time, a New York-style cheesecake – the city’s most iconic dessert – is notable for its graham cracker crust and rich, tangy filling. We think Sheung Wan bakery Sbakery by Mama Soo delivers the best version of this NYC classic in town. We also rate the festive red-ribboned packaging – every cheesecake equals a party for Mama Soo!
Best for: a taste of the Big Apple
Price per cake: from HKD298 for the 4-inch classic NY cheesecake

The vanilla: La Petite Maison (LPM)

Recently refurbished La Petite Maison consistently serves up simple yet sensational French and Mediterranean fare, and their light-as-air gâteau au fromage blanc is a perfect example of this. Fromage blanc is a creamy French cheese similar to yoghurt, creating a melt-in-the-mouth texture. You’ll also see specks of vanilla dotting this cheesecake, adding a sweet complexity to the dessert, which is served with a side of tart berry compote for contrast.
Best for: cheesecake with a certain je ne sais quoi
Price per slice: HKD128

The lemon: Carbone

All the cheesecakes on our list are beautiful in their own way, but this cheesecake might just be our favourite of all (it’s definitely our top choice for special occasions owing to the high price-per-slice ratio). The NY lemon cheesecake at Italian-American restaurant Carbone is unbelievably creamy with an addictive citrus finish. Each yellow-hued slice is served from an old-fashioned dessert trolley, showcasing this gorgeous cake in all its glory.
Best for: the culmination of a celebratory meal (or when life gives you lemons…)
Price per slice: HKD258
Carbone, 9/F, LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Central, 2593 2593, book here
The French: Lady M

Luxury cake boutique Lady M was founded in 2001 in New York City, and the brand’s signature mille crêpes have made a strong showing in Hong Kong too. But it’s the confectionery’s French-style cheesecake rendition – the gâteau nuage – that keeps us coming back for more. We adore this cheesecake’s silky, cloud-like texture and rich, honeyed base.
Best for: a lighter, more refined version of traditional New York cheesecake
Price per slice: HKD72 (or from HKD480 for the 6-inch cheesecake)
