Japanese convenience store giant Lawson is considering a move to Hong Kong following the registration of its latest trademark in the city.

Approved in early May, Lawson’s classic slab serif text logo was registered as a new trademark by Kabushiki Kaisha Lawson, also known as Lawson, Inc.

Under the trademark, a cornucopia of items and services are to be covered under the brand’s remit, such as eggs, cheese, curry, rice, soy sauce, tea, vegetables, mineral water, advertising, newspapers, postal services, musical instruments, umbrellas, liquor articles, and even hotels.

Whilst the brand has been registering its logos for trademark purposes since 2006, this is the first time the original blue logo has been approved, following three approved logo trademarks in Hong Kong in Q1 of 2024.

Across the Pearl River Delta, Macau’s Economic and Technological Development Bureau also approved a new trademark for the logo in February 2025. Singapore’s most recent trademarks for Lawson only date back to 2011.

As of May 2024, Lawson operates 14,608 stores in Japan, 6,400 in China, 703 in Indonesia, 195 in Thailand, 169 in the Philippines, and two in Hawaii.
