FRANCIS founders chef Asher Goldstein, restaurateur James Ward, and sommelier Simone Sammuri have teamed up once again to open modern Mediterranean eatery Carmela at Nan Fung Place in Central. The sexy restaurant is already proving to be a big hit with diners for its vibrant plates the likes of the whipped mackerel “tarama” (HKD78), grilled zucchini flowers (HKD150), house-smoked sardines (HKD178), and linguine with seared tuna, tomato, capers, and chilli (HKD198).

With a prime position at Exchange Square in Central, Black Sheep Restaurants’ newest branch of La Vache! is the biggest to date for the chain, a two-storey space offering a bar on the ground floor and dining area with private rooms upstairs. The classic Parisian-style steakhouse is popular across the city for its winning steak frites (HKD418), trimmed entrecôte steak with special house sauce accompanied by baguette and butter, green salad, and endless fries. We’re keen to try this location’s newly launched bar menu complete with the burger maison (HKD238) gilded with caramelised onion and raclette and steak sandwich (HKD238) starring USDA aged rib-eye.

3. Peak Pizza Exchange Square

Black Sheep has been busy in Central this month, opening a second branch of Peak Pizza right next door to La Vache! (see above). Modelled after the pizza joints that are synonymous with New York City, this location is takeaway only. For a tasty lunch, snack, or dinner on the go, we suggest grabbing a slice (HKD48) of the pepperoni or buffalo chicken. Peak Pizza also dishes out whole pies (from HKD228) that are big enough to feed an army. Shout-out to the industrial-sized bottle of Hidden Valley ranch dressing on the counter, ideal for crust-dipping.

5. Osteria UNO

We have another recommended contemporary Italian restaurant in our midst with the debut of Osteria UNO in Tai Kok Tsui. The eatery is inspired by the traditional osterias found in Rome and features a sophisticated yet cosy interior design and authentic menu courtesy of chef Bhupendra Singh, who trained under renowned Italian chefs Mario Batali and Enrico Bartolini. Handmade pasta and made-to-order pizza are the standouts of the extensive à-la-carte menu, which also presents a selection of antipasti, small plates, grilled meat and seafood, and sweets. Highlights on the pasta front include the lobster linguine (HKD288) and tagliolini black truffle (HKD228), whilst the burrata and ‘nduja (HKD198) and potato and sausage (HKD178) are amongst the pizza pies calling our name.

Sheung Wan’s latest Korean contender is soul-ju, a simple, chilled spot by the folks behind next-door neighbour Sofi Pasta Co. The succinct menu reads like the best of Korean comfort food, from the seafood pancake (HKD88) and fried chicken (HKD58) to the grilled marinated beef short ribs (HKD186) and kimchi fried rice with pork belly and cheese (HKD126). The side dish bibimbap (HKD96) on the lunch menu is a great gut-busting option, coming with a choice of four banchan and corn silk or peach tea.

The final F&B concept to launch at The Henderson, Central’s newest landmark skyscraper, Hana no Kumo sits pretty amongst the clouds on the 38th floor adjacent to swish cocktail bar Peridot. Master chef Ogawa Masaru is in charge of this refined Japanese kappo-style dining experience, where the seasonal lunch menu (HKD1,380 pp) and monthly-changing dinner menu (HKD2,380 pp) can be savoured. The restaurant’s sakura-themed design is simply stunning, featuring lighting that shifts in shades of white and pink to mimic cherry blossoms in bloom.
