Whilst the Mexican food scene in Hong Kong can’t compete with the likes of the West Coast of the USA, New York City, or even London, our city does offer a handful of restaurants to make Mexico proud.

Here’s our round-up of the eateries serving up the finest Mexican cuisine in town, an essential collection of the best birria, tacos, nachos, mole, and more crave-worthy Mexican eats.

The best Mexican restaurants in Hong Kong

1. Tequila Mex

In 2025, Tsim Sha Tsui’s beloved Mexican restaurant Tequila Jack’s was reincarnated as Tequila Mex. The passion of the 20-year-old icon remains, though the interior has been given a much-needed clean and contemporary makeover. Order up the beef tacos (HKD158) made with US sirloin alongside a fruity frozen margarita (from HKD68), and we can guarantee you’ll be a happy camper indeed. Tequila Mex offers live music till late on Thursday through Sunday evenings, making for an unbeatable night out with the gang.

As of February 2026, Tequila Mex has opened a second branch in Causeway Bay, this time uniquely fusing Mexican with Indian cuisine in two dedicated menus.

A Mexican standout in Kennedy Town, 11 Westside launched in Hong Kong in 2017, the brainchild of Netflix-famous chef Esdras Ochoa, who the Los Angeles Times has dubbed the “taco missionary” owing to his passion for spreading the love of Mexican food. Authentic tacos (from HKD50) and other street-food dishes like elote (HKD80) and Chicali taquitos (HKD138) with braised octopus are the focus at the industrial-chic eatery, with the corn tortillas and salsas made in-house using a mix of ingredients from both Hong Kong and LA.

3. Chicano

“Chicano” is a term used to describe a person born in the United States who is of Mexican descent, and this definition is mirrored in the Chicano restaurant inspired by the home cooking of co-founder Gabriel Pérez’s grandmother. Warm and welcoming, the eatery offers an à-la-carte menu of traditional and down-to-earth dishes, featuring hits like the tacos al pastor (HKD178), chicken mole (HKD258), and some of the best birria (HKD243) in town. We’re big fans of Chicano’s weekend brunch, when we can savour our ultimate Mexican brekkie dishes, including chilaquiles (HKD163) and huevos rancheros (HKD153).

4. El Taquero

El Taquero opened in autumn 2023 in Wan Chai, and many say it is THE best Mexican restaurant in the city. The lively eatery is famed for its Al Pastor Experience (HKD276/HKD360), where thinly sliced marinated pork is slow-cooked on a trompo, a vertically rotating spit rotisserie. This luscious meat is served with freshly made corn tortillas and traditional accompaniments for a delicious DIY sharing affair. Other must-orders here include the tortilla chips with five house-made salsas (HKD118), tamales (from HKD48), and any of the tacos. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for either the nopales (HKD46) starring preserved cactus or guacamole and chapulines (HKD46), where grasshopper makes an appearance.

5. El Macho

A funky, hidden spot, there always seems to be a fiesta on at vibrant El Macho in Sai Ying Pun, which is more Tex-Mex than true Mexican. The Angus beef fajitas (HKD206) are the go-to here, served with sizzling splendour, and we also heart the Dirty Sanchez burrito (HKD118) bursting with pork carnitas for a hearty yet wallet-friendly bite. The burrito bowl (HKD138) with a choice of chicken, pulled pork, or chilli con carne is a great carb-free option.

6. XOCO Mexican Cantina & Bar

XOCO is colourful and cosy, offering generous portions of Mexican chow in a tiny space atop the Central–Mid-Levels escalators. The grilled prawn tacos (HKD198), uber-cheesy Yucatan pulled pork enchiladas (HKD199), and grilled steak chimichanga (HKD214) are our top recommendations for filling, flavourful eats. We like that hard taco shells are available on request when we’re feeling nostalgic for the Taco Tuesdays of our youth. Before departing, diners are often sent on their way with a complimentary shot of tequila.

7. Taqueria Super Macho

Taqueria Super Macho The best Mexican restaurants in Hong Kong

Black Sheep Restaurants’ Mexican contender, dining at Taqueria Super Macho is always a feel-good experience fuelled with plenty of margaritas and other tequila- and rum-based tipples. This taco joint serves up flawless grilled Mexican street corn (HKD78) slathered with cotija cheese, chilli, lime, and mayo and choriqueso (HKD128) spicy cheese and chorizo dip to kick things off, followed by the main event: an epic assortment of tacos. We’re partial to the carnitas (HKD48) and Baja fish (HKD38) varieties.

8. Los Gangstas

An off-the-beaten track recommendation for worthy Mexican cuisine in Hong Kong is Los Gangstas on Lamma Island. In our not-so-humble opinion, the Los Gangstas nachos (HKD120) are the best nachos in town. The hip eatery is also one of the few places in the city to showcase tortas, Mexican-style sandwiches made with crusty bread rolls; we rate the torta cochito (HKD120) with al pastor pork, refried beans, avocado, cheese, and pineapple.

9. Birria Y Birria

This restaurant’s moniker tells diners that fried beef quesatacos (HKD130/HKD190) are the signature dish, crispy corn tortillas filled with a messy but scrumptious mix of stewed beef and Oaxaca cheese, served with birria consommé on the side for dipping. The birria poutine (HKD130) and birria burger (HKD150) are more off-piste fusion options at Birria Y Birria that are just as tasty.

10. Santa Monica Cantina

Perched along the Central–Mid-Levels escalators, open-fronted Santa Monica Cantina is a prime spot for people-watching with a margarita in hand. The vibe is Cali-cool, and the LA-inspired Mexican menu features a number of dishes that keep us coming back for more. Our go-tos are the muchos nachos (HKD138) – trust us, this one is generous enough to serve three or four – and spicy shrimp tacos (HKD138).

In its vibrant Wan Chai space, El Gordo’s tacos are the real Mexican deal, the carne asada (HKD48), birria (HKD48), and carnitas (HKD45) in particular when it comes to sticking to tradition. If you want to branch out, try the queso con queso (HKD45) of four cheeses (Oaxaca, cotija, Cheddar, and mozzarella) or pato (HKD45) with duck breast. El Gordo offers great promotions every single day of the week. On Saturdays and Sundays from 12PM to 3PM, the restaurant becomes a family-friendly haven with a free kids’ meal for every two adult mains ordered.
