Ovolo Central and Southside by Ovolo hotels will be closing in Hong Kong this spring after 16 years operating in the city.

As confirmed a spokesperson for the Ovolo Hotels hotel group, Ovolo Central will be shutting their doors on Mar. 29 having served as a hotel since 2010, eight years after the property originally opened as a boutique serviced apartment.

Southside by Ovolo will also be closing, with the last day to stay and dine at the hotel on Apr. 20.

In October 2025, local news reported that Ovolo Central was reportedly sold to Charles Leung Ying-wai, chairman of Hong Kong China Development, for HKD250 million. Ovolo Hotels have no current plans to reopen their Central and Wong Chuk Hang hotels.

VEDA Café & Bar, Ovolo Central’s Indian vegetarian restaurant, is also confirmed to close and has no current plans to reopen in Hong Kong.

In a statement to Foodie, CEO and founder of Ovolo Hotel’s Girish Jhunjhnuwala, said: “Back in 2010, when we first opened on Arbuthnot Road, the idea was simple. Create something I wished existed as a traveler – effortless, thoughtful, and a little bit rebellious.

“Tucked between Soho and Lan Kwai Fong, it stood tall in its own way, bold, different, and unapologetically itself.

“It’s seen the late nights, early mornings, challenges, and celebrations. Through it all, it’s always had heart.

“For over 15 years, it’s been the soul of Ovolo. As we close our doors on 29 March, it’s not an easy moment. But this isn’t really goodbye.

“What started within those walls has travelled far beyond them. Central lives on in every Ovolo, in every experience we create, and in everything we continue to build. It was the beginning of my journey in hospitality, and because of it, we’re only just getting started.”

Ovolo Hotels has current plans to take over the lease of a property managed by Dash Apartments in Aberdeen and launch boutique hotel The Aberdeen by Ovolo in the southern neighbourhood.
