Restaurant Review: Brunch at Buenos Aires Polo Club

Pastries are the (surprising) stars of the show at this Argentine steakhouse

Buenos Aires Polo Club, with its intimate, exclusive country-club feel, opened about a year ago, specialising in – you guessed it – prime cuts of Argentine beef. They’ve recently launched an all-you-can-eat brunch on Saturdays and Sundays ($398/person) featuring a selection of freshly baked breads and pastries brought to your table alongside various bottomless food stations.

The drinks package you choose will make a significant difference to the price though, so make sure to check the latest options on their website. At the time of writing the Soft Drinks package was $188, House Wines and Beers $388 and the Premium Package was an add on of a whopping $588.

Breads and Pastries

Rivalling some of the best bakeries in town, the baked goods here are a yeasty, comforting delight. On the day of our visit, we were presented with freshly baked (still warm from the oven) croissants, brioche, cheese scones, apple muffins and – literally the icing on the cake – gigantic cinnamon buns slathered with dulce de leche frosting. We were surprised we weren’t given butter and jam to go with our morning pastries, so that would be a suggestion to the eatery for future brunch visits. If you’re craving even more sweet carbs, there’s also the option of having French toast prepared tableside.

Seafood and Cold Starters

The highlights here was the silky-smooth, flavourful gravlax and the top-of-the-range cold cuts and cheeses. We wish there had been labels included for each of the items though; this would have made our selection easier.


Made-to-order Omelettes

These omelettes were huge and stuffed to the gills with a wide choice of ingredients. We suggest keeping it simple with just two or three items – the hearty chorizo is particularly recommended, but go easy as it’s quite salty.


Prime Rib and Sides

Every Sunday, there’s a meat-carving station set up, with sides (a choice of one for every diner) brought to the table individually. Our prime rib was tender and juicy but slightly underseasoned – the rich gravy made up for it. On previous visits to the restaurant, we were quite taken with the scrumptious sides, namely the creamed spinach topped with garlic béchamel and Grana Padano cheese, with just a touch of smokiness from the grill. So we were disappointed on this occasion to find that the creamed spinach seemed to be just steamed spinach with a bit of cream.

Dessert Bar

We didn’t fully appreciate this bountiful station because of our earlier pastry overindulgence, but we were impressed by the table brimming with a variety of fresh fruit, creamy cakes, pies, flans and millefeuille. The passion fruit tart was our pick of the sweets – we wanted something light and zesty to end our brunch blowout.


Verdict

We literally rolled out of Buenos Aires Polo Cub thanks to all the delicious baked goods. The overall brunch options are fresh, tasty and generous in portion – and reasonably priced, all considered. Our niggle was that if we hadn’t known that Buenos Aires Polo Club is an Argentine restaurant, we would not have guessed this from the brunch offerings. Sticking to its roots, it would have been nice to see an item or two from Argentina on show – empanadas seem the most obvious choice.
