Previously an industrial area, one can now find charm in Kwun Tong’s local food-packed nooks and crevices. Look hard enough and you’ll discover plenty of hidden gems around the area. Here’s our top list of where to dine in Kwun Tong:

Dining at Home

Take your egg porn to the next level with this twisted egg with grilled eel donburi ($98). Not to be confused with the Indian private kitchen in Mid-Levels of the same name, Dining at Home in Kwun Tong specialises in Japanese food, and their cosy set-up will make you feel like, well, dining at home.

Kanzan Menya

If I’m not stuffing my face in a bowl of traditional ramen, I’m probably dunking my noods in a bowl of Kanzan tsukemen ($85). The pork belly alone is enough to fill me up, but if you’re up for a challenge, there’s some beef tongue ($45) begging to be devoured at Kanzan Menya.

Yuan is Here

Opening up this second branch in Kwun Tong (the first is in Sai Ying Pun), experience Taiwan street food at Yuan is Here. The lunch set feeds my insatiable appetite for anything porky – try the braised pork with rice ($45), which comes with a free drink. And while waiting for your main to arrive, keep your hands busy with some finger foods like deep-fried salty chicken ($35) or pork floss and cheese egg crêpes ($30).

Classified

Classified’s eggs royale ($115) is a dish loved by many for its simplicity. Perfectly poached egg and smoked salmon on top of a warm English muffin, all blanketed with hollandaise sauce, this traditional brekkie dish is a real head-turner.

Imperial

Located in an unobtrusive factory building, Imperial is a hidden gem worthy of much praise. Like many Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong, you can choose from several set menus ranging from $300–500 per person and save yourself the fear of missing out with so many options on the table. For something slightly unusual but delectable, try the strawberry sauce ribs ($98).

Room F, 12/F, King Win Industrial Building, 65–67 King Yip Street, Kwun Tong, 3575 9567 or 9029 1530

The Stadium

The Stadium is an American sports bar complete with darts machine, pool tables and football machine. And while you’re cracking open a cold one with the boys and girls, indulge in a beefy mushroom burger ($118) on the side: double Angus beef patties with grilled portobello and onion, lettuce, tomato, bacon and Monterey Jack cheese. There’s another branch of The Stadium in Causeway Bay.

Running Chicken Live

Some food is not meant for the faint-hearted, and this chicken hotpot with cheese is especially for you adventurous souls. Think fondue – just less thick – with an assortment of savoury bites like chicken, mushrooms and various meatball options. The Kwun Tong branch is also notably different from the other Running Chickens around Hong Kong because of its live music. Be sure to catch the extended happy hour (12–7pm) to enjoy buy one, get one free on cocktails, beer, wine and more.
