We’ve been gorging on some wintery foods since the weather has cooled a bit, and that means two things. Fried foods & meats. It became clear after two very well-timed meals in the same day that there are plenty of dishes around the world that are all tied together by a rich history of frying meat. Here are five dishes that share influences, cooking methods, and a special place in my heart. Vote below to crown the best breaded meat dish! Meet the contenders:

Wiener Schnitzel

Wiener schnitzel (/ˈviːnə ˈʃnɪtsəl/; German for “Viennese schnitzel”) is a very thin, breaded and pan fried cutlet made from veal. It is one of the best known specialities of Viennese cuisine. The Wiener schnitzel is the national dish of Austria. – Wikipedia

Tonkatsu

Tonkatsu (豚カツ, とんかつ or トンカツ, pork cutlet), is a Japanese food which consists of a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet. It is often served with shredded cabbage. Tonkatsu originated in Japan in the 19th century. As well as being served as a single dish, it is also used as a sandwich filling or in combination with curry. – Wikipedia

Chicken Fried Steak

Chicken fried steak (also known as country fried steak) is an American breaded cutlet dish consisting of a piece of steak (tenderised cube steak) coated with seasoned flour and then pan-fried. It is associated with the Southern cuisine of the United States. – Wikipedia

Chicken Parmigiana

Chicken parmigiana (also referred to colloquially in the United States as ‘chicken parm’ and in Australia as a parmi[1] or parma[2]) is a chicken dish based on the Italian parmigiana. It consists of a breaded chicken breast, or chicken schnitzel, covered with a tomato-based neapolitan sauce and cheese. – Wikipedia

Milanesa

The milanesa (in Italian “cotoletta alla milanese”) is a dish common in Latin American countries where generic types of breaded meat fillet preparations are known as a milanesa. A milanesa consists of a thin slice of beef, chicken, veal, or sometimes pork, and even eggplants or soy. Each slice is dipped into beaten eggs, seasoned with salt, and other condiments. Each slice is then dipped in bread crumbs (or occasionally flour) and shallow-fried in oil, one at a time. – Wikipedia
