The new vegan and vegetarian app abillionveg (ABV) aims to get people online seeking out their favourite veggie options and sharing them with the rest of the world. It also means that those choosing a meat-free lifestyle can still enjoy a meal out with their meat-loving friends as the app is based on dishes at any restaurant (be it vegan, veggie or not), rating them with a star system so that you can choose the ones that appeal most. Users can make comments on each dish and explain what they enjoyed about it.
The app also makes it easy for those adopting a flexitarian lifestyle to be able to eat at their favourite haunts without having to cheat on their meatless days.
The following vegan dishes in Hong Kong all have five-star ratings on ABV and are from restaurants that currently serve full omnivorous menus. We’ve included a quote from each dish to give you an idea why it was so well loved by the person who rated it:
Vegan burger at Grand Café, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong
ABV quote: “First time trying the Impossible Burger, and it is indistinguishable from a meat patty, from look, to flavour, to texture, to taste. To the point where we second-guessed if we were not given a meat burger. Best burger ever, period.”
Lobby, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, 1 Harbour Road, Wanchai, 2584 7722, book online
Roast aubergine in romesco sauce at Bread Street Kitchen & Bar
ABV quote: “Part of their new vegan menu that was just launched. The sauce was really flavourful and creamy. A good appetiser for sharing.”
Shop G02, G/F, Peak Galleria, 118 Peak Road, The Peak, 2350 3888, book online
Jackfruit hot dog at HABITŪ
ABV quote: “It’s jackfruit pulled pork served with veggies in a charcoal sesame bun. The jackfruit was cold, which was interesting. Refreshing for a hot day! A little on the spicy side.”

Rice rolls at LockCha
ABV quote: “This famous Hong Kong snack has a perfect texture and is not too mushy (like I’ve had before at other places). Served with sesame and soy sauce.”
Central: Shop G06–07, G/F, Block 01, Tai Kwun, 10 Hollywood Road, Central, 2276 5777
Admiralty: G/F, K.S. Lo Gallery, Hong Kong Park, 2801 7177
Tacu tacu at TokyoLima
ABV quote: “This was hands down my favourite dish of the night at TokyoLima. Traditional Peruvian rice with delicious grilled vegetables. The rice was so perfectly charred and was mixed with snow peas, which gave the dish a really deep aroma and texture. If you’re going to order one thing at TokyoLima, go for this rice and the vegan okra tempura rolls. Both are delicious!”
18–20 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 2811 1152, book online
Rajas y calabazas at Agave Central
ABV quote: “These three tacos were delicious (and so cute!). The filling is roasted New Mexico pepper, zucchini, pumpkin, onion and corn with fresh tomato salsa. They have a few other taco options that are vegan or vegetarian. These were great pre-dinner snacks to enjoy with happy-hour margaritas!”
26 Hollywood Road, Central, 2523 1988, book online
Pad see eaw gai at Mak Mak
ABV quote: “One of the veggie options on their all-you-can-eat brunch menu! Delicious flat rice noodles with a variety of veggies and vegetarian oyster sauce.”
Shop 217A, 2/F, LANDMARK ATRIUM, 15 Queen’s Road Central, Central, 2983 1003, book online
Vegetable tagine at Le Souk
ABV quote: “This is served with honey, so ask for it without and it’s vegan. Lots of cooked veggies in a delicious sauce. Pairs well with couscous.”
4 Staunton Street, SoHo, Central, 2522 2128, book online
Vegetable souvlaki at Santorini Greek Restaurant
ABV quote: “These grilled vegetables are so flavourful and are seasoned with olive oil, black vinaigrette and toasted sesame seeds. It normally comes with galotyri (cheese) on the side, but I asked them to omit it to make it vegan. I recommend ordering this as an appetiser to share, because I don’t think I’d be full if I ordered this as a main.”
LG/F, The Elgin, 51 Elgin Street, SoHo, Central, 2810 6106, book online
Mezze platter at Le Pain Quotidien
ABV quote: “This platter was bigger and more delicious than we anticipated. With fresh crusty bread, carrots, celery, tomatoes and cucumber, with three generous-sized dips (baba ganoush, avocado and beetroot). Very delicious, fresh and filling.”
