Intimate whisky and highball specialist The ThirtySix Bar & Co – whose luxurious decor is inspired by trains of yore – has launched an unbeatable Monday–Saturday happy hour (5–8pm) featuring buy-one-get-one-free classic cocktails, Asahi draught and Tsingtao bottled beer and house red and white wines, with prices starting from just $60.
The new bar food menu is a great complement to the tipples, this time inspired by Japan’s izakayas, with a wide variety of both meaty and vegetarian bites up for grabs.
Squid with Korean citron sauce
For carnivores, chargrilled skewers are in the spotlight, ranging from ox tongue flambéed in bourbon ($58), to smoked squid with Korean citron sauce flambéed with rum ($38), to Spanish pork belly kimchi roll ($48).
Old-Fashioned Burger
If you’re hankering for something a bit more substantial to curb that hangover, we recommend the Old-Fashioned Burger ($138), an ode to the cocktail itself, a flavourful Australian beef patty topped with cheese and bitter-infused orange and cherry jam with sesame.
Kudos to The ThirtySix for not ignoring the veggies and flexitarians amongst us, offering tempting bites like rice crackers with veggie mocktail mousseline ($88), grilled cheese daifuku ($38) and edamame rice cake (kiritanpo) with wasabi-seaweed mayo ($68).
Salted egg chicken crackling
The gold medal of the lot goes to the salted egg chicken crackling ($68), fried chicken skin dusted generously with salted egg-yolk powder. This is crackling on crack, dangerously addictive.
