37 Steakhouse & Bar and Mina House

37 Steakhouse & Bar Hong Kong

The newly revamped Peak Galleria is shaping up to be a F&B cash cow (Gordan Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen and Bar opened earlier this year, and Rajasthan Rifles by Black Sheep just made its debut). Joining these lofty folk in mid-July are two concepts by hospitality group The Food Story (which recently brought the three GOSANGO brands – J POT, Wagyu Vanne and Sensu – to Causeway Bay). Glam 37 Steakhouse & Bar is the HK outpost of the popular Tokyo restaurant, which first opened in Roppongi nearly a decade ago. As at the GOSANGO outlets, Hiyama Kuroge Wagyu will be showcased. A sake bar featuring the full range of sake by ancient brewery Sawaya Matsumoto is another element of 37. On the same level as 37 is all-day diner Mina House, where Instagrammable desserts are the stars (with a kiosk at ground level for takeaways). There’s
even a decadent two-hour all-you-can-eat dessert offering ($158/adult; $108/child), available daily 11am–5:30pm, where free-flow dessert is yours for the eating.

And yet another offering from Pirata Group has just been announced. This one is a modern Japanese concept called Honjo. Opening its doors at the end of July in Sheung Wan, it will occupy a vast space near the more intimate TMK space mentioned below. Honjo promises vibrant interiors with stained-glass windows and a quirky “retrofuturistism” vibe from the 1950s that sounds as exciting as the food. Sushi, tempura and hot dishes are all on the menu. We’re quite keen to check out both these new Pirata offerings.

Sensu by GOSANGO

Sensu by GOSANGO Hong Kong

Along with siblings J POT (hotpot) and Wagyu Vanne (high-end yakiniku) on the same floor, casual all-day-dining spot Sensu specialises in the revered Hiyama Kuroge Wagyu. These eateries are located in the mostly food-void Jaffe Road part of Causeway Bay, offering new options for those who work or live near the area. Sensu sounds like a reason to venture out to this less popular part of CWB, especially for the daily afternoon tea and happy hour featuring sake-based cocktails.

This contemporary Sichuan eatery is now more accessible to HK Islanders with the opening of Sichuan House’s fourth branch at K11 in TST (the others can be found at major shopping malls in Mongkok, Tsing Yi and Yuen Long). This one places the spotlight on Sichuan-style hotpot – the spicy duck blood and bean curd soup base should be the one you’re after. The skewers – from lamb rack with cumin to pork belly with tomato – are also winners.

Closures

Chifa

Pirata Group’s Peruvian-Chinese spot on Peel Street, SoHo, has just announced via social media it will be shutting shop. We’re terribly sad to see Chifa go, but at least we have two brand-new openings from the busy group to look forward to (see above). And for more of Pirata’s Peruvian fusion cuisine, there’s still the lovely TokyoLima.

Little Bao (SoHo)

Announced on Little Bao’s Instagram, Chef May Chow shared the sad news of the closure of the SoHo branch of eatery, the hotspot that sparked a bao trend that’s endured for over six years now. The government have reclaimed the space for urban development, so now your favourite bao can only be found at Little Bao’s spacious branch over in Causeway Bay.
