Young Master Brewery + Beef & Liberty at Tong Chong Street Market

Local craft brewers Young Master and the burger wizards at Beef & Liberty are headlining at Tong Chong Street Market this month. Young Master’s premiering a crazy-cool coffee amber ale (named Tong Chong Street, natch) in collaboration with Singapore’s Common Man Coffee Roasters, as well as lunch combos
featuring tempting sandwiches (Cubano, grilled cheese and Christmas turkey) and bar snacks from the TAP – The Ale Project. Or grab a brewskie and head to B&L’s pop-up food truck, where the plant-based Impossible Truck Burger makes its debut.

The Grand Gelinaz! Shuffle 2019

The Grand Gelinaz! Shuffle sees cutting-edge chefs’ collective Gelinaz organising a unique worldwide food performance where 148 chefs from 38 countries swap their recipes for one day. This translates to 700 hours of live cooking and 2,200 streamed recipes across 17 time zones. The chefs have each received eight recipes from another participating chef, and their task is this: “to undo each one of them, to remix them all and create eight new, spontaneously rethought and totally remodelled dishes”. Here in HK, the chefs shaking things up with their creative culinary interpretations are Angelo Agliano of Tosca, David Thompson of Aaharn, Jowett Yu of Ho Lee Fook, Vicky Lau of Tate Dining Room, Vicky Cheng of VEA and May Chow of Happy Paradise.

Test Kitchen x Chef Kwanghi Chan (Ireland/Hong Kong)

Chef Kwanghi Chan

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Ireland, award-winning chef Kwanghi Chan is partnering with the Bord Bia Irish Food Board to present a very Irish menu to Hong Kong. Chef Chan is a celebrated chef in Ireland, with multiple awards under his belt as well as regular television appearances on The Six O’Clock Show. He is also on the judging panel for the Euro-Toques Ireland Young Chef of the Year, where he selects participants for the competition. What can we expect from this Irish pop-up? You’ll get to taste eight courses including delicacies such as Irish oyster, Irish lamb rack, Irish rib-eye and locally inspired eats using produce from HK markets.

Sensual Festive Luxury in the Clouds at OZONE

OZONE Hong Kong’s Oscar Mena

Head to ritzy rooftop bar OZONE for this collaboration with Lane Crawford and TOM FORD Beauty, with mixologist Oscar Mena creating a cocktail menu inspired by the brand’s signature fragrances and classic red lipstick. Guests who order from this special menu will be gifted with a TOM FORD fragrance sample and a makeup/fragrance consultation voucher.

Finnish Christmas Market

We love ourselves a European-style Christmas market, and this year’s Finnish Christmas Market sounds like
just the ticket for a big dose of Nordic charm. There’ll be more than 30 stalls, a VR Finnish travel experience, a Mölkky fun zone and a visit from the big man himself, all the way from the Arctic Circle. On the food front, we’re looking forward to eats from Nordic deli Rye House, Finnish bilberry and lingonberry juices, Nordic rye and Christmas sourdough from Mayse Artisan Bakery and a whole host of Finnish food and drink courtesy of Nordic distributor Pear & Carrot, from Taiga chocolate (above) to Laitilan Kukko beer.

The World’s Big Sleep Out

Global campaign The World’s Big Sleep Out targets helping one million homeless around the world, with more than 50,000 people from near and far sacrificing their own warm beds for one night sleeping under the stars. In Hong Kong, half the proceeds will go to charity ImpactHK in support of our own homeless population. The Big Sleep Out includes musical performances, food and drink plus video messages and stories by Chris Martin, Will Smith and Helen Mirren.

Swedish Winter

Along with the Finnish Christmas Market (see above), Finland’s Nordic neighbour Sweden is really upping the
Scandi ante this holiday season. Swedish Winter is coming to Tsim Sha Tsui. On the food front, there’s glögg and gingerbread aplenty, but for this supremely family-friendly event, there’s loads of other festive fun stuff planned, including a reading corner (with readings in English and Cantonese), a creative corner with ornament making, performances by Swedish magician Charlie Caper, an exhibition featuring illustrations by Swedish children’s book illustrators and – best of all – a meet-and-greet with St Nick himself.

The Great Christmas Picnic

In partnership with Oolaa, The Great Christmas Picnic sounds like a great way to get ourselves in a supremely festive frame of mind as we count down to the 25th. Test Kitchen’s 4-hands festive feast with chefs Christopher Ho & Devon Hou

Currently Test Kitchen’s resident head chef, Devon Hou has a very impressive CV. She started her career at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental’s Amber restaurant and went on to be part of the opening team at Tate Dining Room, which received its Michelin star while the chef was working there. Now, she’s teaming up with Chef Christopher Ho – a former apprentice of Chef Eric Räty of one-Michelin-starred Arbor (winner of our Foodie Forks 2019 Editors’ Choice Best Restaurant). Together, they’ll be creating a festive menu using a wide range of local and global produce. Look forward to nine courses, with dishes such as barley risotto Christmas stuffing, chicken liver and black truffle, mince pie with slow-cooked oxtail and Chinese sausage and a very Hong Kong-style roast pigeon.
