It’s a whole new year and a whole new decade. For us, that means a whole lot of food discoveries await! Here’s a solid list of ways to start your 2020 in a most delicious fashion:

La Vache! steak sandwich + frites to your door for one month only

La Vache! steak sandwich

La Vache! is packaging up its entrecôte steak for the first time into a sandwich along with a side of the eatery’s moreish frites and will deliver them direct to your door. There’s a catch though – it’s only for one month! If you fancy a six-inch baguette filled with a 10-ounce USDA Prime steak and Béarnaise sauce with a side of fries brought right to you, you best get a moo-ve on and order in January. And just for the month, in addition to its regular delivery area of Kennedy Town to Tai Hang and up to The Peak, Black Sheep Restaurants GO will open an extra delivery zone in Tsim Sha Tsui around La Vache!’s Hart Avenue location.

Tong Chong Street Market has started the year in a healthy, eco-conscious way, with the beloved street market focusing on fresh local produce and sustainability in January and February. Headliners include Max Levy of
Okra and Caleb Ng, Josh Ng and David Koo from Interval Coffee Bar. A highlight in January is special event Heroes Series: The Gourmet Theatre, where five leading Hong Kong chefs (Nicholas Chew of Bibo, May Chow of Happy Paradise, Sang Jeong of ICHU, Barry Quek of Beet and Jacky Chan of The Refinery) will recreate the flavours of their home countries using local ingredients in a open-kitchen, station-style format at One Island East.

Alert for matcha lovers! New local company Matchali, specialising in healthy drinks made with ceremonial-grade matcha powder from a fifth-generation tea expert in Japan, is launching with this pop-up at The Upper House. Come here to wet your whistle with a matcha latte made with plant-based milk, made-to-order hand-whisked matcha, turmeric ginger tonic, yuzu hojicha soda and more.

Multi-award-winning chef Davide Degiovanni of Gordon Ramsay’s Union Street Café in London is bringing his innovative northern Italian dishes to the 852 for four nights in January. The nine-course menu celebrates the best seasonal ingredients and showcases the flavours that have influenced his cooking style. Dishes like whipped salted cod polenta with pickled red cabbage, vitello tonnato, gnocchi with Gorgonzola, leek and hazelnut, ox cheek with Jerusalem artichoke and risotto with ricotta, shellfish and salsa verde are some of the delights to be experienced on this bellisima menu at our favourite pop-up kitchen space, Test Kitchen.

The world’s best female chefs guest at Tate – Ana Ros

Girl power strikes again! Chef Vicky Lau of Tate Dining Room has invited three of the best female chefs from the around the world to strut their stuff at her Michelin-starred restaurant this year. This month sees Chef Ana Ros kicking off the programme. Chef Ros runs the acclaimed Hisa Franko in Slovenia. She was named The World’s Best Female Chef in 2017 and had a Chef’s Table episode dedicated to her work. Chef Lau and Chef Ros will collaborate on this special menu, featuring dishes like charcoal kinki fish with fermented Chinese black bean sauce and clementine confit with verbena gelato and yoghurt meringue by Chef Lau and Chef Ros’ East-West herb taco and mortadella consommé and scallop.

Drink for a Cause and help Australia

The tragic bushfire crisis in Australia is the focus of this charitable wine-tasting event organised by French wine guide Bettane + Desseauve. Get your vino on and lend a hand to Oz, with 20% of all ticket sales donated to wine communities in Adelaide Hills, where the ongoing fires have scorched one-third of vineyards in the wine region and killed more than one billion animals in the country. Red wines from Australia and around the world will be
showcased alongside light bites courtesy of Stan Café.

Also providing support for the devastating wildfires in Australia, a portion of the proceeds of Feather & Bone’s Australia Day rooftop party will be donated to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, which has nonstop been battling the blaze. Expect free-flow Aussie beer, wine and sausages, plenty of G&Ts, an all-Australian lunch menu and a playlist courtesy of Triple J. In true lazy Sunday spirit, modern Malaysian street-food eatery JALAN is launching its Long Lunch (though we think it’s more akin to brunch) this month, to be repeated on the last Sunday of every month going forward. This is laid-back communal dining at its finest where you can share a hawker-style spread showcasing the likes of crispy vegetable skewers, green sambal roasted chicken, sambal skate wing in banana leaf and plenty of achar-style pickles and rice. The sweet offerings are a bonus, from pandan crêpes to Milo doughnuts.
