If you’re a wine lover – pro or otherwise – we think you’ll love the promotion that The Consortium of Alto Adige Wines is offering from 23 November–6 December, where you’ll get a chance to taste wines from Alto Adige (also known as Südtirol), one of Italy’s smallest and most revered wine regions but also one that’s often overlooked by the bigger players.

Located in northern Italy near the borders of Austria and Switzerland, with a unique climate featuring hot, sunny days and cooler nights, Alto Adige produces more than 20 grape varieties, with an astounding 98% of DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) quality. These include whites like Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer, reds such as Lagrein and the fabulous dessert wine that is Moscato Rosa.

We had a taste of some of these wines at a lunch at Italian hotspot 121BC in Central and were bowled over by their unique, powerful flavours, making for fine food pairings.

Kettmeir Gewürztraminer 2018 paired with 121BC’s roast Jerusalem artichokes, Parmesan custard, cherry tomato, pine nuts

Franz Haas Moscato Rosa 2018 paired with 121BC’s ricotta panna cotta, passion fruit, Grand Marnier, mint, walnuts

You can also sample specially priced Alto Adige wines, by the glass and bottle, at these restaurants around town:

This is a great chance to try a top Italian wine region that’s not very well known in Hong Kong. You may just find your new favourite bottle!
