With another COVID summer in full swing, parents in Hong Kong are constantly dreaming up new ways to keep their little ones occupied after more than a year of homeschooling.

We here at Foodie like to think there’s a silver lining in everything, and what better mutually beneficial situation is there than teaching your child to cook? On the most optimistic spectrum, they could one day whip up a fancy meal and win MasterChef Junior, and on a more realistic scale, they could feed themselves when desperate times call for desperate measures.

We’ve sought out three great cooking classes for mini chefs to try out this summer. Happy cooking!

Harry’s Kitchen

A busy roster of STEAM x baking classes for kids aged 3 and above is on offer this summer at fun bakery workshop Harry’s Kitchen at K11 MUSEA. Taught by hotel-trained pastry chefs in a variety of languages (Cantonese, English and Mandarin), little chefs can unleash their creativity in baking up sweet treats the likes of cookies, doughnuts, cupcakes and cakes. Limited to three children per class, there’s ample space for kids to roam during each session. We did a trial class in Mandarin, so it was a double whammy of language and cooking. There’s a 20% discount on all classes in July, so check out their website for further details.

Kee Wah Studio

A local institution, Kee Wah Bakery is synonymous with classic Cantonese pastries and sweets. Kee Wah Studios, sprouted from the popular brand in 2017, teaches traditional pastry techniques as a way to preserve Hong Kong’s culinary heritage. Located in an old tenement built in the 1930s on Queen’s Road East, the cooking studio is part of a Grade III historic building. Parent-and-child cooking classes range from making steamed buns to egg tarts – click here for more information.

Rosewood Hong Kong staycation

Little guests staying at the Rosewood can try their hand at crafting The Legacy House’s signature fish dumplings under the supervision of the restaurant’s dim sum chefs. Created by acclaimed Chinese Executive Chef Li Chi-wai, these adorably plump dumplings are shaped and coloured like goldfish, sure to entice mini gourmands. For more details, click here.
