Traditional foods are what we most look forward to each Chinese New Year, with puddings – both sweet and savoury – taking centre stage.

For many, the Year of the Dragon is the most auspicious of all on the Chinese zodiac, representing good health, wealth, and fortune, and there are puds galore to enjoy. We’ve narrowed down the list to our top eight favourite Chinese New Year puddings and sweet treats to enjoy in 2024.

The best Chinese New Year puddings in Hong Kong 2024

Nam Fong

Nam Fong CNY pudding

We love the design of the Lunar New Year gift box at Nam Fong, which is inspired by the look of ancient Chinese coins. The round, mulberry-hued packaging features a textured top handle, so it doubles up as a lucky handbag! Interchangeable compartments are provided along with the box, and it can also be reused as a container, perhaps for storing candy or accessories. There’s a choice of three flavours, each in a 900g pudding: turnip pudding with preserved meat (HKD308), traditional coconut rice pudding (HKD288), and – for an inventive change of pace – matcha and red bean rice pudding (HKD288).

Hotel ICON

Hotel ICON CNY puddings

This Year of the Dragon, fine-dining Cantonese restaurant Above & Beyond at Hotel ICON is offering three creative Chinese New Year puddings (HKD298 each) by executive chef Chi Ki Wong. We’re especially tempted by the black truffle turnip pudding with Yunnan ham and preserved meat, with the intense umami flavour of the ham enhanced by the distinct truffle aroma. The taro pudding with sakura shrimp, conpoy, and preserved meat is another savoury contender, whilst the New Year pudding with brown sugar and ginger is a sweet, chewy delight, steamed with ginger juice, Okinawa black sugar, and glutinous rice paste infused with the flavours of red date and melon seed.

Ming Court Cordis

Ming Court Cordis CNY puddings

More Michelin-starred Chinese New Year goodies await at Ming Court at Cordis hotel. The coconut Chinese New Year pudding (HKD288) and premium red date pudding with coconut (HKD348) are luxurious puds, but it’s the abalone, conpoy, air-dried preserved meat, and turnip pudding (HKD348) that makes the biggest splash in the trio for its use of home-grown turnips, planted and harvested at a local farm in Fanling by the restaurant’s own chefs. We also rate the eco-friendly pudding packaging, which is 100% recyclable, made from biodegradable oyster-shell powder.
