Hong Kong’s Jewish and Israeli community numbers in the several thousands, yet there are few restaurants serving the cuisines of the religion and country, besides Hong Kong’s two Israeli restaurants, FRANCIS and Falafel TLV.

However, Mul Hayam, the once private kitchen situated inside the Kehilat Zion Synagogue in Tsim Sha Tsui East, is a rare venue offering the public authentic Jewish-style food from Israel and the Levantine region.

With imported kosher meat from Australia and the USA, the restaurant observes the Jewish diet, serving a well-spiced menu of classics found at any Jewish restaurant: Middle Eastern dips, spicy soups, vegetable canapés, and hearty meats.

We recommend ordering the mezze platter (HKD128) to savour four types of dips rooted in Jewish culture, including a smoky hummus, tahini, a spicy and peppery matbucha, and purple coleslaw. The pita paired with the mezze is super fluffy and sweet.

The French-style soup (HKD98), whilst not optimal for sharing, is reminiscent of Indian curries, packed with flavour. An order of Morrocan chicken cigars (HKD115) is suited for the table with a kosher twist on spring rolls.

For mains, the traditional BBQ chicken in skewers (HKD278) is very juicy, wrapped in a spice mix that effectively represents Israeli cuisine. To fill up, the classic chicken schnitzel (HKD278) comes with fries and has a perfect texture on the fried breadcrumb fillet. You can also order the Australian Scotch fillet steak (HKD450/250g) if you want a beefy inclusion.
